Notes from the Idol PV Couch– Week 25 2017 (0625-0701)

Over at New School Kaidan, I write a few words about some of the recently released promotional videos. At times, this is a bit of a grueling task, and all of my thoughts can get a little scattered when multiple PVs are released on the same day. But, I always try to present the promotional videos in the best light possible, and I try to remember that each of these pieces of entertainment for your a me is actually the manifestation of a dream for some young girl or girls out there in Japan. Here then is a collection of those write-ups, with a few words sometimes added after a week+ of viewing.

This week, we come back with a vengeance with Promotional videos from:

PINK CRES. – Pretty・Cute・Future

Filmed during their opening slot at the last Buono! concert, “Kirei Kawai Mirai” starts with an introduction of the girls (so when I gush over over Kobayashi Hikaru you’ll know who I’m talking about). With electric guitars forming the backbone of the arrangement, seems like it might be at odds with the conception of PINK CRES. This isn’t really the case, with the song providing a nice slice of pop alongside the guitar solos. Visually, “Kirei Kawai Mirai” is the compliment of “fun fun fun” with onscreen graphics over live shots comprising the majority of the video. Maybe the song is just a step behind the infectiousness of “fun fun fun”, but “Oh oh oh chu chu chu, Your baby girl” is every bit as catchy. Also, Hikaru gets more chances to sing, so this is my jam for that. “Pretty Cute Future” from PINK CRES.’s debut release “crescendo” goes on sale June 28, 2017.

PINK CRES. – fun fun fun

Don’t call them “Miyabi Factory” anymore! PINK CRES. may have the girl’s party theme of the summer with the incessantly catchy “fun fun fun”. Follow Miyabi, Hikaru, and Yuuka on their trip to the ocean and you’ll get nothing but positive messages, bouncy rhythms, and a fashionably cute time. If “fun fun fun” is the promise of PINK CRES., then I’m already onboard.

Dream Ami – Kimi no Tonari

Dream Ami gives you a good look at what your date with her would look like. Shot entirely on a cell phone, “Kimi no Tonari” is both a look at Ami being cuddly and cute and the ultimate self-insert fantasy (if you’re inclined that way). You may need matching sweaters to keep up with her cuteness, but then again you’ll get a beach blanket time at the park, couch cuddles, and an Italian dinner for your investment. Naturally, the highlight of “Kimi no Tonari” is Dream Ami’s pleasant voice which matches with the mid-tempo, MOR pop perfectly. Pair this song with lazy mid-summer days and you will have the perfect soundtrack when Sirius returns to the night sky. “Kimi no Tonari” will be in stores on July 12, 2017.

Yurumerumo! – Moi Moi

Tired of your typical family restaurant? Yurumerumo!s solution to the normal is a little hypnosis and some psychedelic colored food prep. Firstly, “Moi Moi” (from Yurumerumo!’s “Disco Psychedelica”) is a hilarious bit of filmed entertainment with a full-on disco party raging by the video’s end. The promotional video also works as a bit of of an allegory for the idol life in general, which means that you and I are both hyponotized, drooling buffoons mindlessly dancing to the beat of probably the worst waitresses of all time. I’m OK with that. Before we finish here, I’d like to give Ano bonus points for serving while riding a hoverboard. Yurumerumo!’s “Disco Psychedelica” hits the record store racks on June 28, 2017 release, .

BAND-MAID – Choose me

BAND-MAID’s “Choose Me” should be the final motivation you need to get to J-Pop Summit this year. The studio performance video showcases the band’s virtues greatly. Starting with a quick, driven tempo, BAND-MAID builds the song with bass lines that groove with some occasional pops and great guitar licks. The promotional video may not offer location shoots or a “story”, but the lighting effects and performance gives the straight dope on what BAND-MAID is all about. BAND-MAID will serve it up at J-Pop Summit 2017 September 9 & 10. You can buy BAND-MAID’s “Daydreaming / Choose me” on July 19, 2017.

Pimm’s – WA!!

Full of summer feeling, the girls of Pimm’s give you a few different look at the warmer months. Beach, beachwear, festivals, baths, and daytime naps seem to occupy the time. The song is light fare so as not to bog you down when you should be having fun. At the very least, you’ll be singing, “Wa, wa, wa-wa, wa!” once or twice after your viewing. The video highlight of “WA!!” is probably the wonderfully trippy video tunnel through any roughly circular object in the girls’ hands. “WA!!” is a baked look at summer for sure. “WA / Wa!! / Gekiyavacation” goes on sale July 12, 2017.
